Resources Every Artist Should Know About

When I was beginning in this industry, I had no idea that there were books that could have given me the information I needed and wanted available in bookstores, online bookstores, and libraries. I think I thought that the only way you could contact a publisher or magazine editor is if you had “contacts” or “knew the right people”. I hope this article helps you have a bit easier path than my own if you are seeking to be published as an artist or writer. Note that these books encompass writing, art, and crafts. I find that there are a lot of books out there geared to the fine artist looking to get into a gallery. This may not be you – but don’t dismiss the book without looking at it. Often there is excellent advice on other issues – such as PR – that can help you.

I have provided a link to Amazon.com for each of the books. If you buy it through that link, a small percentage goes toward helping me pay for the site and the newsletter. Even better, you can click on the link, read a bit about each book, and in many instances read other reviews of the books.

Keep in mind that many of these books are truly reference (meaning you will look at them a few times a year) and may be best utilized through the library rather than purchasing them. If your local library doesn’t have the books, consider creating your own library with a local art group or group of friends.

I’m sure there are even more great books out there, so please take time to talk to the reference librarian at your local library. Librarians are amazing people with more knowledge about how to find knowledge than most of us will ever possess. Value them as a resource as you would gold! This list has grown and grown over the past few weeks as I think of more resources that are valuable to me. I don’t think I could ever complete the list. That is good news! That means that there is a resource out there for almost any information you need – you just need to do a bit of research to find it.
