claim your power
Ralph Marston (http://www.greatday.com/) wrote this (in part) in his "daily motivator":
"Have forces beyond your control injured you or held you back? Of course they have. Do you really want to depend on those same forces to move you forward?
Though others may be to blame for your situation, you are nonetheless responsible for it. Though you may have many excellent reasons to feel sorry for yourself, such pity will not add anything of value to your life."
This really resonated with me because one of my "pet peeves" is when someone tells me that they are "waiting for inspiration". It is as though they are waiting for the hand of God to reach out and pluck and idea out of the air and hand it to them. I believe that God (or the universe or whatever power you believe in) has already given you everything you need to be creative. When we pretend that inspiration and creativity are handed to us every once in a while you give up your own power. That is not what God intended.
Somewhere along the way, in our society, we have confused the concept of humility with the idea of personal responsibility. I believe that every bit of my talent comes from God - however, I don't believe that God holds a big vat of creativity and only ladles it out from time to time on the "chosen few". Rather, I believe that God has already given us everything we need and that pretending that power comes from outside of us simply gives us an excuse not to be creative.
There are certainly times we are more creative than others. I have been fighting a flu-like illness for the last two weeks and have hardly picked up a paintbrush - let alone spent any time really creating. Yes, life does sometimes get in the way. However, my ability to be creative is not diminished - but my personal ability to tap into that creativity is dimmed for the present. This is not something special with regard to creativity - heck, my ability to do housework (never one of my strong suits) has also been dimmed.
There are a lot of things in life that can sap our creativity. There is no reason to give it away by developing a belief system that says you can only be creative at certain times. Creativity is just problem solving. You solve problems nearly all day long; from deciding what to eat for breakfast, to work decisions, to driving a car - you are always exercising your creativity. It is a never-ending fount. However, what you believe is what is true for you - so if you believe that you must wait for inspiration, then wait you will.
Instead, claim the power that
is already inside you. Know that you are a creative being. If you sit down and
your creative juices aren't flowing - then give yourself a break. Take on a
small project that doesn't seem as overwhelming and use it to get yourself back
into a creative "groove". Nothing is added to your life, nor do you
get any points for humility or Godliness by denying the gift of creativity inside
you. Instead, claim that creativity every day and in doing so you are thanking
God (and the universe) for the talent you already have. That is how to celebrate
you life!
