Tera's wish

ornament scrapbook

A local artist in Northern California showed me her Ornament Scrapbook and gave me permission to share the idea with you. I am so excited about this project! I can't wait until Christmas to pull out my own ornaments and get started.

An Ornament Scrapbook is a history of your Christmas decorations. It provides a photograph of each ornament and the story of when and where you got it. If you are like me, you have been given ornaments as gifts, people have made them, you made them yourself, and you picked them up on trips. Decorating the Tree is something that I look forward to each year because I really enjoy pulling out the ornaments and remembering where I got them.

An Ornament Scrapbook is kept out during the holidays so that your guests can look through it and learn about the Ornaments and decorations throughout your house. Faye, the artist that shared her book with me, said that her guests often come with an ornament and then look for it's entry in the book the next time they visit. Faye uses a Polaroid camera to photograph her ornaments. If you have a lot of ornaments, that could be very expensive! You might want to photograph more than one ornament at a time to save money.

On each page, record the year you received it and any particulars you remember. For example, where was it purchased, is there any special story about it? Was it a gift? As you get new ornaments, you can add them to the book as you get them.

Faye told me that she started her Ornament Scrapbook when her mother died because she got a lot of Ornaments from her and wished she knew the history. In this way she is able to make sure her daughters know the history of each piece. Now her family gets involved in the book and loves to look through it and read the stories. If she gets an ornament as a gift, she gives the giver the option to write the description of the ornament in the book if they wish.

This is a wonderful project that you will become a family heirloom. Give it a try!
